WALLS OF PERCEPTION!

I'm currently working on a project in Berlin called 'Walls of Perception'. We arrived on saturday with no concrete idea of how it was going to turn out. A lot of people from different nationalities and with different artistic backgrounds come together and have this one topic connecting to the fall of the Berlin Wall in 1989. So far we have had some video installations, performance acts and music/audio. Experimenting and touching the different layers of art really helped to draw people together with the same state of mind and finally today we started to form groups to work on a particular project.

I am so incredibly happy!
From the 7th to the 9th of november an exhibition will take place through Berlin. A 1000 stones are representing the wall and on the 9th of november we will break down the wall so a domino effect occurs. The symbol of the wall finally being broken in 1989. We are really really happy with the 5 stones out of a 1000 that were sent all over the world for people to make a statement and carry out a message into the world. At the moment we are brainstorming a lot and coming up with some nice verbs that will eventually be put in a visual construction.

Because there is so little time, I will try to put pictures online later on. But at the moment, I wanted you guys to know that everything here is falling into place and everything is connected to the topic 'walls' and 'perception'. We only realize after these few days how many walls there actually are around us, every day we break some down and build some up. I am planning to return to Berlin for the exhibition and I hope I can soon put some pictures online of the few people that are working on the stones in overalls, covered in paint, trying to create a beautiful artwork out of so many different layers and backgrounds. And even though everyone is working on different projects at the moment, we will put all of these items together into one exhibition on friday, that will take place here in the centre of Berlin. Audio, video, performance, installation and illustration will be combined and form a UNITY.

That's it for now, it's great, it's fantastic, it's beautiful that we are getting the opportunity to work on this project together!

Paintpaintpaint

Since I'm painting a lot at the moment for academy purposes I thought it was time to post something new:

Some free work I did for a friend. Hm. It's more like doodling than thinking of something to paint, then sketch and then start painting it. I enjoy just messing around with acrylic and ink.
A quick sketch with east indian ink. He reminds me of someone I know?This one isn't finished at all, but going into the right direction. I tend to make women look like creepy vampires a lot of the time though when I'm painting. I don't know why, I guess I just don't know how to handle colour?
This one's a finished painting, next time I ought to use less black and white and more colour. I tend to use black and white a lot when I'm working with Acrylic, but also when I'm drawing I'm cornering myself by using too many black lines. Quite satisfied with the flowers though.

So that was an update, there you go.

Friday I'm leaving for Berlin for a project and I'll try to update my blog and throw some process pictures on it!

Projectweek Dutch Dolls 'Cultural Diversity'

Walking through the city of Rotterdam Vera and I were trying to think of a concept for our 'Dutch Dolls Project'. (Check it out: www.dutchdolls.nl)
The main theme throughout the week is 'Cultural Diversity'. Our product is supposed to fit into the already existing collection of the Dutch Dolls. We decided to make a small Tea House out of wood. Appearing very Dutch on the outside (for example the typical staircase facades) but differing from culture to culture on the inside.
These are the five types of 'Cultural Tea' inside of the house.

Ok so finally, finally I came up with something I'm satisfied with. Everything I had was appearantly more of a sketch than something I could use. I started over and this is what I came up with, 3 spreads and the cover of the book finished. The drawings may change to inkdrawings, but for now they're just pencil and pen.

Sometimes it feels like I'm still a small girl, with her feet stuck in the pages of the story of her life. Not knowing where I'll end up. I continue to believe in happy endings, I wonder for how long.
